ADOPTION FAQ's
Below are some common questions and answers about our Sharp Eagle puppies and adoption process*. We will add to this list periodically but please don't hesitate to contact us if your particular question isn't addressed from the information shared here.
Note: Our adoption screening process may change after September 10, 2024 due to new modifications being made to Good Dog's platform as of that same date. For the time being, we recommend applicants use the following direct links to view our Puppy Profiles or to complete the Adoption Form.
What is your adoption process?
Our specific screening process includes the following stages:
View Puppy Info - You can begin an inquiry on this same page.
Apply to Adopt - Include both References: (a.) your veterinary clinic and (b.) one non-relative.
Home Assessment - Scheduling the interview! This informal face-to-face is also when we guide you through checking the property for adoption readiness. (Done virtually for out-of-state applicants.)
Deposit - This is when you will sign the Deposit form (electronically) and submit a non-refundable payment.
Health Panel - Review your pup's dna health panel results. This may be done earlier per breeder's discretion.
Transportation - Declare your preferred Adoption Date and transport budget. The cost of ground transport (if applicable) may vary based on distance and timeframe.
Adoption - Sign the Adoption agreement & warranty. Pay the remainder of your adoption fee on/before the adoption day. Travel safely home with your Sharp Eagle puppy.
We will provide the medical records electronically within 24-hours of the adoption day. Note: We require your vet to examine the pup within a few days after adoption, to establish care and obtain the Rx for monthly preventatives.
What is the best source (for dog adoption)?
"Whether you choose to get your next dog from a breeder, shelter, or rescue, all that matters is doing your research, finding an ethical source, and making the best choice for your lifestyle."
"Responsible dog ownership is about freedom of choice. Everyone has different needs, so the choice is yours to work with a responsible breeder or an ethical shelter or rescue. Choose what source suits you best so you can care for your dog for life."
What is included with our puppy adoptions?
Medical records will always be shared electronically. Other puppy specific items vary based on the pup's age when they are adopted.
Can I see the puppies in-person?
PRE-ADOPTION
For the safety of people and puppies we do not permit facility visits since our facility is also where our home is. We can certainly understand a buyer's concern for wanting to see the facility a puppy is reared in, as we hope they can also come to understand our concern for caution on our end of things such as not having met people before they apply to adopt one of our puppies. Though generally we like to believe people have good intentions we do need to be cautious. We can do video chats in the meantime.
ADOPTION DAY
We will always meet in a safe and public area for everyone's best interest on adoption days and to limit potential stress for any pups remaining at our facility.
How big do they get?
Sharp Eagle mum Annie averages 32-37 pounds while Sharp Eagle puppa Buddy averages 35-40 pounds. They are considered a medium or intermediate breed mix in terms of height and weight.
Has their physical state been changed at all?
We do not alter our puppies' physical state in any way (i.e., tails are natural; dew claws are kept)--unless medically necessary--other than spaying/neutering once it is age appropriate.
Do they shed a lot?
Some may be considered a reduced shedder based on their Wisdom Health Panel results, while others may be considered a heavy shedder.
Are your puppies housebroken, or crate trained?
They are mostly potty trained/house trained, however, it is good to plan for a few accidents inside as they adjust to a new environment after being adopted. Our pups are mostly crate trained, however, we have worked up to an window of four hours on average.
Will I get their medical papers on adoption day?
We send all medical records electronically to an applicant's preferred veterinarian within 24-hours after the adoption day. A copy of the puppy's vaccination records will be electronically sent to the adoptive family or printed off so they have that on hand during travels with the puppy, The microchip account will be transferred to a puppy's new owners on their respective adoption day, or after a puppy's visit to their new vet. We may verify in person at the adoption meeting that a puppy's microchip still functions properly. After the final adoption paperwork is signed electronically, we will put everything into one PDF document as a convenient reference, including the following documents:
Signed deposit agreement
Health panel results
Signed adoption agreement
Microchip transfer certificate
Are they smart dogs?
This answer will vary based on each puppy, however, we have found that pups from our 2023 litters are very intelligent. This is why we stress the importance of having a training program in place before adoption is finalized. Whether puppy training is done through an online resource such as the Good Dog Puppy Program, or through a local organization/professional, the key will be consistent and ongoing training. View articles here for additional insight about this double working breed mix.
Are they affectionate?
Most of ours enjoy giving and receiving affection, are very athletic, and playful.
Do they get along with other dogs?
This answer will largely depend on the other dog(s) in question. If a particular puppy shows signs of disliking other dogs we work with a local dog trainer to pinpoint the cause and work through that with the puppy to minimize any lasting effects.
What should I know about transporting a puppy?
Local adoptions made to/within 25 miles of the Indianapolis Int'l Airport (IND) do not incur a transport charge. The final adoption cost for one puppy may not be the same for another depending on the miscellaneous details their new family chooses for them. Requests for ground delivery farther than 1-hour of Indianapolis require further discussion and planning.
Note: Use of a third-party courier for long distance (ground transport) holds an average charge of $1.00/mile. We obtain quotes through UShip and/or CitizenShipper.
